ONA11 full schedule released; Field Trips open

The program is complete, the speakers are set, and we’re ready to start the 30-day countdown to the
2011 Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet, Sept. 22-24 at the Marriott Copley Place Boston.

Just added: Field Trips

New this year, we offer a safari into Boston’s tech community to give you an inside look at what the Boston Globe, the Cambridge Innovation Center and Google Boston are cooking up in their offices. ONA11 Field Trips will be held throughout the day Thursday, Sept. 22, the day before general sessions open. Shuttles will depart from and return to the Marriott Copley Place. Registration fees vary, as do times; details are below.

A visit to the Boston Globe’s brand new media lab, where you will see the strategy and product development of the newly launched BostonGlobe.com and learn abouts its approach to responsive design to accommodate all devices. Projects include Boston.com/BostonGlobe everywhere, Boston in real-time, advertising innovation.

Take a tour of the Kendall Square hub and join a discussion about what goes on the engineering side of Google Boston. Director of Sales and Operations Brian Schmidt and local rockstars Fernanda Viegas, Martin Wattenberg and Jon Orwant will dive into various data-visualization efforts and Kathryn Hurley (from Mountain View) will host a Fusion Tables workshop showing how to make the most out of structured data.

Get a deep immersion in start-up culture and entrepreneurial journalism. The Cambridge Innovation Center is home to 220 startups in one building. The trip includes a tour, a discusion with CIC executives on the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Boston/Cambridge and “Speed Dating,” a lunch featuring rotating meetings with entrepreneurs. The afternoon will end with networking at the CIC’s Venture Cafe, a weekly event bringing together local entrepreneurs, CEOs and VCs.

Pre-Con, Career Summit & Job Fair, Law School and Hackathon

Also on Thursday: Join us for intensive on-site workshops and off-site, heavy-duty legal exploration and hacking.

  • Law School for Digital Journalists with the Online Media Legal Network at Harvard University’s Berkman Center: A full day of practical legal training on digital issues presented in conjunction with Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society and the UNC Center for Media Law and Policy.   • Hands-On Developing Workshops: Two onsite sessions focusing on the ins and outs of programming, including Building with HTML, CSS and JavaScript, as well as Introduction to Cloud Servers and Simple Python Deployment; Introduction to Agile, and a Multimedia Safari.   • J-Lab: Entrepreneuring 3.0: J-Lab returns for an all-day workshop with an all-star lineup discussing the new forms of funding and business partnerships emerging in the new media ecosystem, including guerrilla marketing; raising more revenue (building more ad spots, what to charge, how to find underwriters, when to barter); best themes and plug-ins for local news sites; building your board; and effective partnerships and collaborations.   • Career Summit & Job Fair: Our full day of career development and networking continues to grow. Recruiters from major and independent media and technology companies are signing up to meet you at the Job Fair from 10 a.m.-4p.m. Afternoon Career Summit presentations will focus on navigating the market, landing a job, advancing your digital journalism skills and building your brand.
